It's a good time to set some new team goals – or is it?

It’s January, a time known for resolutions and target-setting.

But before launching ahead, consider a listening session. Offer your team a space to land together. Get a sense of where you are and what's working. Discuss at least these four topics:

1. Celebration

What past goals did you meet? What wins are you marking? In a non-stop world where the next goal is always around the corner, it's deeply meaningful to pause and name how far you've come.

2. Learnings and surprises

Not every initiative goes as planned. What lessons can benefit the group?

3. Gratitude

Who helped you out? Whose ideas saved the day recently? Gratitude shared in front of a group increases cohesion and motivation.

4. Your 'Why'

What is your team 'why'? The overarching reason you're hard at work together. Write this down – or better, let us draw it for you as a visual reference. Getting clear on a shared vision will help make all the day-to-day decisions easier.

Consider the invite, setting and format! Sofas feel different from a conference table. Tell everyone what to expect, make sure everyone gets to share.

If you're a manager, let this session be purely for listening, human to human. Use it to land in the same place as a group. Point out the right direction together.

Then it will feel natural to start thinking about a new set of goals.
